Salon Series

We are excited to launch our 2025 chapter of Chardonnay With a Cube of Ice. If you haven’t been yet, it’s Tzavta’s naughty sister series, Science at its most accessible, exhilarating, and fun form.  Or as Emma  Goldman, perfectly summarized it, “If I can’t dance, it’s not my revolution!”.

Ticket includes the talk, DJ dance party, passed around delicious food and a welcome glass of Chardonnay -ice cube optional.

Here are the details:

Chardonnay with a Cube of Ice takes science out of the lab and into the heart of the community, provides a platform and a dance floor for researchers to share knowledge, ideas - and their top five secret ‘summit push’ playlist. Honouring cutting-edge research and celebrating women in science, each event features a leading scientist for a talk, followed by a DJ dance party—a body and mind package with spicy bites, stiff drinks, loud music and a sparkly disco ball.

HARD SCIENCE. HARD LIQUOR. HARDCORE DANCING.

“Molecules, Microbes, and Mindsets That Matter!

Can a single molecule help solve one of the greatest health threats of our time?

This is the surprising journey of a light-activated molecule now being used in the fight against drug-resistant infections—an urgent issue that affects us all and could shape the future of medicine. From unexpected pandemic solutions to global collaboration, it’s a story of science reaching far beyond the lab. And a reminder that how we do science matters just as much as what we discover.

Dr. Belinda Heyne is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Calgary. She is a Photochemist, bringing molecules to life with light! Dr. Heyne's research harnesses visible light to energize the oxygen we breathe, creating singlet oxygen. She leverages this potent molecule to successfully combat the escalating global challenge of antimicrobial resistance.

Her impact reaches well beyond her lab. As a passionate advocate for women in science, Dr. Heyne captivates audiences in numerous ways, from chemistry magic shows to the Women's Global Breakfast in Calgary (an event she helped organize). Her dedication to science and advocacy has earned her numerous awards, including the Immigrant of Distinction Award, which holds a special place in her heart as it celebrates her contributions to her field and community.

Dr. Belinda Heyne was born and raised in Belgium where she earned her Ph.D. in Science from the University of Liège in 2004. Her passion for photochemistry led her to Canada, where she worked alongside the renowned Prof. J.C. Scaiano, known as the Godfather of Photochemistry, at the University of Ottawa. In 2007, she embarked on her independent career at the University of Calgary and now proudly leads the Department of Chemistry as Head.
